Project Direction By The Project Board

Following inability to acquire support that enables an enterprise to "start", the project is testing an "advertising platform", through which it aims to trade to cover operating costs. No trading has taken place, although we have provisionally agreed to take orders.

The market testing should give an indication of how useful the planned feature is to the website.

Labeled a Social Enterprise By The Project Board

The last news entry was the day before Social Enterprise Day. Following that day, the project has been having an identity crisis. The business and its strong social element has all the haul marks of a Social Enterprise, yet it was planned as a business.

It seems our identity crisis is over. We are a Social Enterprise, however we are an enterprise that is not funded by a government body or financing agent. We are a true business run for the benefit of the community it serves.

Thank you to Global Enterprise Week.

Global Entrepreneur Week By The Project Board

Our newly formed project learned of Global Entrepreneur Week on the Saturday before it started. We asked for ticked when Sift Media asked for people to submit their email addresses. We later found that only "high profile" people could attend. That said, Monday we watched and on Tuesday we engaged.

What a roller coaster. Very few of the community we had spoken to during the course of the project had ever heard of it. But, it is mainly targeted at teaching children the values of entrepreneurship. What a great idea. As a collective body that is building support in the SME community we were keen to survey our followers and see if todays entrepreneurs were getting the support on offer. 50/50. So we've been chipping in and trying to support from the side line. If we'd have known we could have done so much more. Tomorrow is Social Enterprise Day.

It should be another fun packed day of issues, debate and discussion.

How Smart is Tom? By The Project Board

Roll-up, roll-up.

We are on Page 21 of Big G for "small business marketing tips" on UK search. Tom believes as there are only 183,000 results he can get us top of Page 1 with a simple video post.

How smart is @surreymarketing

But we need to find him something. A video...not any old video. Tom wants an audio interview with a project member, author or contributor. Do you want some free PR?

Data Protection Policy By The Project Board

A Data Protection Policy has been released following the release of your Social Networking Policy. The two are inter-twined and we needed one before the other. The Data Protection Policy outlines how the project actually holds very little data and intends to hold very little data about its website visitors.

Having a Data Protection policy helps build trust. This is all part of what a small business should do to build credibility. See our Data Prtoection Policy here.

Social Networking Policy By The Project Board

Our first policy has been created and delivered by Alex Cohen of Xander Marketing. Alex runs a small business as is keen to lead by example and put his stamp on the project. We were really impressed by the standard of work and feel that Xander Marketing are clearly able to demonstrate best practice.

This policy is quite critical as we have been waiting to start using our social networking tools to greater effect. Thank You Alex. To read the policy, visit Social Networking Policy.

User feedback a Top Tip By The Project Board

All the useful feedback received has gone in to another revision of the website layout and design to offer the third iteration. We were really hoping a website development company would have sponsored the project by now, but it's okay...user feedback is great and improvements and being made to make the website more attractive.

Unique Visitors: 100 Ave per day By The Project Board

The website is now averaging over 100 unique visitors per day and saw over 1,000 visitors hit the website in the first 10 days of its second month. We're pleased. Reports continue to arrive about how useful the site is becoming.

Moving up the ladder By The Project Board

After falling out of the search engine listing on the Big G, we returned back to the first page for our search term...this is great. Nobody is actually searching for our Keyphrase, but we are content. We are on page 1, and have nudged up one place to No.7. Project Team very happy.

Adopting Responsibility By The Project Board

Top10Tips.co.uk has adopted the word 'responsibility' with www.adoptaword.com, because the project aims to raise awareness and put something back just like us. Both bodies work hard to provide opportunities to communicate for both organisations and individuals that traditionally have not had a voice.

Section Intro sorted By The Project Board

We had decided to wait until we hit ten features to decide exactly how to lay things out. The section intro has now been created splitting out the features in to various areas. Design holds 3 features. Marketing and all the others hold a single feature. Start-up and Pre Start-up have been introduced to split start-up issues from small business issues.

If you check today, you will see that the section intro page is now clean and tidy, where as the homepage for Small Business is a little out of line. We will re-introduce this page later in the week.

Project removed from forum By The Project Board

It seems our binding principles of openness and doing what you said you were going to do, have not sat well with a few. Shocking. Project removed from Forum. Lack of trust, despite continual efforts. Perhaps over-kill on our part. Who knows. It is clear that small businesses online seem to scale marketing down to promotion! Is marketing more than promotion? Perhaps this is why there is so much miss direction on the web.

New Designs Arrived By The Project Board

New designs are in the for the small business homepage. The project has been getting it in the neck about how the original page made no sense. The page title was wrong, the information was laid out correctly, la la. It's not like any small biz designer has jumped forward and stepped up to the challenge! But one has arrived...what a great contribution.

Forums and Tips... By The Project Board

However, my reason for messaging you is the top10tips Site. I have managed to spend some considerable time on it over last night and again this morning. What a resource!! Some of the Articles are excellent. I also enjoyed the marketing information. For anyone looking for RELEVANT information, with no bs and written in language that can easily be understood, top10tips is the place to go. I think I mentioned that People like, for example, Brian Tracey, and Andrew Reynolds have made millions out of ambitious People like me by, selling the very same information, many times over. The fact that this Project has been Designed by small Business Owners, FOR small Business Owners is unique, as far as I know. It also makes the content far more credible. Rather than giving you a load of crap for it, XXX Forum should be thanking you for it and it supports the goal of a forum instead of taking away.

Traffic Analysis By The Project Board

Reviewing the traffic levels has been really fun. In July the domain had 1 (one) Unique Visit. Part way through August the url was posted on an SEO forum to engage with the experts. No-one there. So the url was posted on a Business Forum with only a homepage to show. We were laughed off as having a project inconceivable and representing a joke. We pulled 477 unique visits in the first 16 days of the project being online. Someone was interested in something. 16 days in to September we received 883 unique visits with only 6 SME features available. It sounded like more people are interested! Approx. 147 visits per feature is one way to look at it. Will our adverising space sell? We think someone some where will find it an attractive proposition.

BusinessZone.co.uk do good stuff By The Project Board

Today we saw something revolutionary...well we thought so. Interaction between at a conference in York by National Federation of Enterprise Agency with delegates, where Dan Martin (Editor of BusinessZone.co.uk) remotely asked Twitter users for questions for him to post directly to the panel.

This project has only been on the web for 28 days. We think this was great. It was a two way communication between the panel and people on Twitter. The panel included various business spokespeople, ministers and other politicians. URL:Click Here

Donations for exposure... By The Project Board

As the project builds steam and moves forward...we are encouraging other small businesses to ride on the back of the project and swap 'a little know-how' for exposure. We are looking for a good blog implementation. Digital Stationery has donated an Email Letterhead. We welcome anybody else to donate time or resources to the project pool to get things kick-started. Any contributions of this nature will be well documented and we are keen to promote contributors as much as possible.
